West Howe has a long and interesting history dating back to the Old English period. Its name comes from the Old English noun “howe,” which refers to a 
ridge of elevated ground. This is fitting, as there is indeed a ridge of high land in this part of Bournemouth, and it was along this ridge that the hamlets of High Howe, West Howe, and East Howe were established.
Until the early 20th century, West Howe was mainly farmland. However, the arrival of E. A. Elliot’s pottery works in the area brought about a change, as the pottery works became one of the key employers in the area.
Today, West Howe is largely made up of affordable housing owned by the local authority. Many of the homes in the area have been purchased by long-term residents, which has helped to foster a strong sense of community in the area.
