During the Second World War, Bournemouth faced heavy damage, despite initially avoiding significant bombing. On May 23, 1943, a German fighter bomber raid resulted in 131 deaths and the destruction of 3,359 buildings, with two large hotels being completely destroyed. It is thought that the large number of RAF airmen stationed in the town may have been the reason for the attack. The seafront was also damaged as it was fortified against a potential invasion. Cast iron lampposts and benches along the seafront were removed and melted down for use in munitions, as were large portions of the superstructure from both Bournemouth and Boscombe piers, which were intentionally breached to prevent their use by enemy ships. The extensive use of barbed wire and anti-tank obstacles along the beach and the mines at the base of the chines took two years to remove after peace was finally achieved.
