In 1875, a 160,000-gallon water tower was erected in Palmerston Road, at the time when there were 244
homes in Boscombe. In February 1877, the Royal Boscombe Hospital, later known as the Royal Victoria Hospital, opened its doors in Shelley Road and had room for 12 patients. In 1880, the Boscombe Land Society was established and bought 13 acres of land in November 1881, located in the current Knole Road area with 73 plots available. Over the next decade, much of the Shelley property east of Sea Road was developed, adding another 70 plots. In 1883, Pokesdown Station was established on the Brockenhurst to Bournemouth line of the LSWR.
