The name “Poole” is derived from a combination of the Celtic word “bol” and the Old
English word “pool,” which means a place near a pool or creek. There are various spellings of the name, including Pool, Pole, Poles, Poll, Polle, Polman, and Poolman. The region around modern-day Poole has a long history of human habitation, stretching back over 2,500 years. In the 3rd century BC, the Celts known as the Durotriges moved from their hilltop settlements at Maiden Castle and Badbury Rings to the heathlands surrounding the River Frome and Poole Harbour. During the Roman conquest of Britain in the 1st century, Roman forces landed at Poole and took control of an Iron Age settlement at Hamworthy, located just west of the contemporary town centre.
