Bournemouth is a seaside town located in the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council area in the county of Dorset. It has a population of 183,491 as per the 2011 census, making it the largest town in Dorset. It is situated on the southern coast of England, 24 miles from both Dorchester and Southampton. Bournemouth is part of a larger urban area, the South East Dorset conurbation, which has a total population of 465,000.

Before its establishment in 1810 by Lewis Tregonwell, the area was an uninhabited heathland that was only occasionally visited by fishermen and smugglers. The town was initially promoted as a health resort and saw a significant growth after being mentioned in Augustus Granville’s 1841 book “The Spas of England”. The arrival of the railway further accelerated the town’s growth and it became a formal town in 1870.
