The Pokesdown Railway Station was established in 1886 and became the central hub of the community. As a result, various public facilities 
such as a laundry and fire station were built in the surrounding area.
In 1895, Pokesdown was declared an urban district with its boundaries extending from the seashore to Wollstonecraft Road, east of Crabton Close Road, south of Christchurch Road to Warwick Road, along the railway, across Clarence Park, and over a portion of King’s Park to beyond Harewood Avenue. The boundaries then crossed Christchurch Road and the railway to reach Cranleigh Road and headed towards Southbourne Road between Irving and Watcombe Roads, turned into Belle Vue Road, and finally ended at Clifton Road along the seashore. This area covered the Shelley, Portman, Stourwood, and Stourfield Estates.
